FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies: Scaling manufacturing capacity with green energy
FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies wanted locally produced green energy for its existing facility and planned expansion. Soon it will offtake renewable energy from a solar park just 70 kilometres away from its facility in Denmark through a Better Energy Power Purchase Agreement.
Desire to grow sustainably
How do you create Europe’s largest manufacturing site for biologics, vaccines and advanced therapies, when your ambition is to grow sustainably?
This was recently a key question for FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, a global leader in biopharmaceutical manufacturing. The enterprise was at a crossroads in Denmark:
With plans to expand its Hillerød facility, it needed more than just increased production capacity. It needed to grow sustainably.
"A key component of our sustainability strategy is to source renewable energy produced close to our facilities,” says Peter Skals, Director of Sustainability.
So, the expansion wasn’t just about size. It was also about aligning with the company’s “Partners for the Planet” strategy. It set an ambitious goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2040.
To achieve this, it focused on securing locally produced green energy, ensuring that their growth supported both their operations and Denmark’s energy transition.
Green energy produced just 70 kilometres away
FUJIFILM partnered with Better Energy to offtake 40 GWh of renewable energy annually through a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
The PPA will provide enough green energy to cover the entire energy consumption of FUJIFILM’s Hillerød site and the expanded operations as of July 2025.
The collaboration was built on a shared understanding of FUJIFILM's current and future needs. Through open and constructive dialogue, the two sides reached an agreement that balances sustainability goals and long-term value.
The renewable energy will come from a newly developed solar park near Vedde in Sorø municipality. The solar park is just 70 kilometres from FUJIFILM’s manufacturing facility in Hillerød. The location fulfils the criteria of being locally produced green energy.
Vedde Solar Park was created in collaboration with the local community. It will feature several dedicated nature areas along with recreational initiatives. From walking trails and viewing platforms to picnic areas.
Impact of partnership
“A key component of our sustainability strategy is to source renewable energy produced close to our facilities.
The Power Purchase Agreement with Better Energy provides us with zero-emissions electricity and the chance to have a greater impact in our local community.”

Why partner with Better Energy?
Start learning about PPAs
-
A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) allows your business to purchase green electricity at a fixed price and volume over an extended period.
Your power purchase contributes to establishing a new renewable energy park that positively impacts the surrounding community and nature.
-
When you sign a PPA, you purchase green electricity from a Better Energy renewable energy park. Each MWh your company purchases is documented through Gaurantees of Origin (GoO).
This is applicable to your market-based scope 2 reporting in line with GHG protocol and CSRD.
-
PPAs are typically long-term agreements lasting 5 to 10 years. The advanced demand for renewable energy enables us to secure project financing to build the solar park.
-
We believe all businesses should be able to buy green.
Throughout dialogues, we’ll explore different offtake volumes that make sense for your business, and you will have full control over how much of your electricity consumption you want to cover through the PPA.
-
All you have to do to get started is get in touch with us! We’ll start by looking at your energy consumption and operations to understand your business’s needs.
This allows us to propose a PPA solution and renewable energy park suited to your business.
The length of the dialogues can vary, but we’re committed to making sure you have the information you need to make an informed decision.
